TOUR RACE 9 - MUSIC CITY MOTORPLEX - JUNE 30, 2007

In Nashville, it's all about winning the DBV Properties guitar.  Taylor Webb joined the Open Division the day before for one purpose - win a guitar, and he was the first one to earn his guitar with his trip to victory lane.  Then his brother Alec won the Future Stars race to round out an incredible day for the Webb family.  Kenneth Mayfield traveled from Oklahoma and overcame a spin in qualifying to earn his custom trophy.  Finally, Michael Kipp towed 20+ hours all the way from Canada because he heard about the guitars.  Now he has one to bring back to show our friends north of the border.

The Nashville Fairgrounds guitar trophy is legendary, and pays tribute to some of the great drivers that raced there including Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison, and David Pearson.  Those drivers combined to win 16 NASCAR  championships and they started their careers at this same track where our Future Stars are beginning their careers.

The Open Division "opened" the show for the fans in the storied grandstands with the best show ever put on by 5 cars.  There was good, hard, clean racing with the 20 lap feature running caution free.  In the end, Taylor Webb prevailed over Stephen Hershey who remains in a close point battle with Robert Kuczmarski for the Open Division championship.

The Future Stars division was the second feature of the evening, and an excited Taylor Webb jumped out of his car in victory lane and ran to his Future Stars car for that race.  It was one of the best Future Stars races we have ever seen, as there was tough and mostly clean racing throughout the field for the entire race.  Kyle Baugh seemed headed for victory, but had the toughest break of the weekend when he brushed the wall to avoid a spinning car.  That contact clearly damaged his car, as he quickly dropped through the pack after the restart.  The Farley brothers from Colorado steadily moved up toward the front in heavy traffic, while the Webb brothers battled with their Indiana friend Brett Robinson at the front of the pack.  In the end, Alec Webb held on for what his father described as a "storybook" ending.  The Webb's were the happiest family in Tennessee.

In Junior PRO, everyone anticipated a showdown between Mary Daniels and Kenneth Mayfield.  They both had fast cars, and both desperately wanted to win a guitar.  Sure enough, almost immediately, there were running 1-2 on the track.  Entering turn 3 Mary lost control and Kenneth slid into her.  Both cars were able to continue but Mary sustained damage which slowed her car, and Kenneth was able to "Get er' done" and take home his Barry Clapp original guitar.

Finally, the walls were put in place to open "The Big Track" and the ol' 5/8 mile was ready to challenge all comers just as it has for over 50 years.  Our PRO Division was up to the task.  An invert of 8 positions ensured close racing at the start, but that close racing continued for the entire race, with the top cars swapping positions at the edge of control.  Fast qualifier Jacob France battled through the field but wasn't able to catch Canadian Michael Kipp who notched the victory.  It was a fantastic end to the Touring Series weekend and everyone in the race can now boast of racing at this historic track - and bringing their car home safe.

The next Touring Series weekend will be for the PRO Division only at the challenging 1/2 mile Race City Speedway in Calgary, Canada.  This is Michael Kipp's home track - will an American be able to go up there and bring home the trophy to return the favor?  Stay tuned. . .
