TOUR RACE 2 - RIVERVIEW SPEEDWAY

MMRA Touring Series race #2 was a great mix of drama, action, and excitement in the middle of the most bizarre weather ever seen at an MMRA event.  After heavy rains the night before, race morning dawned wet, with a huge band of showers stretching from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to New York predicted to settle over Tennessee for the duration of the day.  Everyone who entered the gate at Riverview Speedway expected a rainout and most of the morning discussion was about contingency plans for rain.

In the middle of all this, track crews dried the track and practice got underway.  Then for the rest of the day, it would sprinkle a bit, then stop.  It was frustrating, and we all expected the next shower would be the end - but somehow the program kept moving forward.  Amazingly, as that heavy band of showers moved through the area, a tiny crack in the band formed over the Carthage area, allowing us to continue on-track activities.  Then, as a final bizarre twist, heavy fog moved in just before the Open Division race, contributing to a scary looking lap 2 crash, and causing the track to reduce the race to 30 laps from 50.

Through all of this, there was some great on-track action.  Similar to last year, most first time visitors to Riverview Speedway absolutely fell in love with the exciting roller coaster ride in and out of the super high-banked corners.  Riverview is a challenging track that demands great courage - perhaps that's why the oldest winner in victory lane was just 16 years old. Right behind these brave kids were also several veterans who knew how to avoid the wrecks and come home with a strong finish as well.
