2003 MMRA Grand National Race - West

MMRA's first trip out west under new management was a great
success as South Sound Speedway hosted the Western Grand National race.
Early morning rain gave way to sunny skies, cool breezes, and low humidity.
Racers from Washington, Idaho, Utah, and California came together to battle
for the MMRA championship, bragging rights, and fun.
Track promoter Butch Behn welcomed our racers and local
leaders Mike Foster and Terry Stewart were a great help in organizing the
day. At the drivers meeting, Mike Foster reminded racers they had 50
laps - and the race couldn't be won on the first lap. As such, there
were cautions on the second lap of both features. After that, the
racing settled down with several long green flag runs that produced great
racing.
In the end, Brooke Lefor not only kept her points lead but
won the Future Stars feature to take the championship. In the Open
Division, Patrick Phillips showed he still knows how to drive a minicup,
after moving up to late models by taking the lead early and holding it until
the checkered flag. While Patrick won the battle, Daniel Moore won the
war by taking the MMRA championship with a second place finish in the race.
MMRA was impressed with the great attitudes we saw in our
western racers and the beauty of the northwest scenery. We are looking
for things to get bigger and better as this sport continues to grow.
